Painting the town for 50 years
04.07.10
CYPRUS’ most famous art supplies shop is celebrating its 50th birthday - quite an achievement for a family business in these days when the chain store is king.
The survival – and success - of the Rainbow Art Stores is testament to vision, dedication and persistence during the hard times of its early years. But it has also flourished because the family’s two stores are such delightful places to visit, the sandstone-fronted shop on the walls of old Nicosia in particular.
Over the decades Rainbow has supplied most of Cyprus’ most celebrated artists, among them Georgios Skotinos, Constantinos Joachim, Andreas Charalambides, Michalis Charalambides, Eleni Nikodemou, Christos Christou, and Alexia Hadginicolou.
True to its name, the brightly-lit store dances with colour.
Tubes of paint in various sizes and myriad shades adorn countless racks. There are trinkets and knick-knacks everywhere. Shelves groan with boxes of beads, packages of bright neon feathers and hundreds of metres of ribbon wrapped tightly around their spools.
